SONNY STITT

When I was just starting out playing alto, another budding sax player tried to tell me that Sonny Stitt wrote out all his solos before he recorded them. I knew this wasn't true but the perfection of his playing made me question my certainty. I also never subscribed to the idea that Sonny copied Bird. Stitt was his own man, with his own bebop vocabulary, original sound and uniquely driving time feel. His early recordings with Bud Powell are informative. His recording with the Oscar Peterson Trio and "TUNE UP" are sublime.
